Moments when things feel out of control is almost a given when you’re in leadership. There are a million things going on all at the same time that need your attention and everything feels like it’s about to fall apart.
When that happens, and it will at some point in your leadership, finding a way to stay in ease can help you hold onto your sanity while also not killing anyone in the process 🙂
If you find yourself in the middle of absolute chaos follow these four steps to find your way back to ease and peace of mind.
Establish some breathing room
When you’re in the middle of chaos it’s hard to see the forest for the trees. As such, the first step you need to take to find ease in chaos is to establish some breathing room.
You have to create space in your head and heart to figure things out. You need to feel grounded if you are going to move through that chaos an staying in the middle of it will only serve to spiral you further off course.
Step back from the situation, take a breath (or several) and then move onto the next step.
Accept that you don’t have things under control
Feeling out of control is hard, especially if you are a type A person like me. Having things under control is part of what helps me stay productive and get things done.
But when things get chaotic I find that accepting things are out of control for the moment actually helps me recalibrate so I can put a plan together of what I need to do.
If you’re in the middle of a chaotic situation, stop trying to hold on to the illusion that you have everything under control and accept that you don’t. You might be surprised to discover the weight of it all suddenly feels like it has lifted just in the act of accepting.
Feelings of failing may rise up for you here but don’t let those thoughts gain too much traction in your head because you’re not done yet. Instead move onto to step three.
Surrender to the fact that this is where you are for the moment
This doesn’t mean that you will stay here it simply means this is your current reality. As you give up resisting what is and surrender to it, you will find that things often clear up in your mind.
Surrendering doesn’t mean you throw your arms up and say screw it, letting it all fall to pieces. Instead, the surrender I am speaking about is an internal surrender of saying, “this is where I am for now and I’m going to choose to let it be okay for this moment.
When you let go of that need to have everything be just right, usually a plan for what to do next will present itself.
Surrendering allows you to quiet the noise so you can figure out your next move.
Engage with what you can and let go of the rest
Part of why chaos feels so overwhelming is because, typically, you are trying to juggle multiple things at the same time. You’re trying to give your undivided attention to several things at once and that is not possible since you can really only give undivided attention to one thing at a time.
Take an honest assessment of what needs to get done and figure out which ones only you can do. Anything on the list that someone else is capable of doing, even if they don’t do it as well as you would do it, needs to be delegated.
If you really have to do everything on the list then decide what most needs to happen next and do that thing. Once that is done, move on to the next. Sometimes everything can’t happen and being okay to let those things go will help you stay in a place of peace during chaotic moments.
Chaos doesn’t have to get the better of you. If you follow these four steps, you CAN find ease in chaos.
