I, obviously, believe in the power of coaching to bring about significant transformation in your life and subsequently in your leadership. But how do you know if you’re ready for coaching? How do you know if coaching is right for you?
You can’t always know for sure but here are six (6) things to consider in assessing your readiness for coaching.
Ready to make changes?
Change is the only constant in life and coaches are agents of change.
Einstein famously said that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the very definition of insanity. If you want a different outcome, you HAVE to start doing things differently.
Your coach will ask you to make some very intentional changes in your life. If you are married to doing life in a very specific way without allowing for the possibility that there may be other more effective options, then you are likely not ready for coaching.
A willingness to embrace change, even when it feels scary, is an absolute necessity if coaching is going to work for you.
Ready to be challenged?
If you are okay and comfortable with the status quo then you may not be ready for coaching.
Coaching will challenge you to try new things and push you outside your comfort zone. You will likely be asked to do things you’ve never done before or consider things you’ve never thought of before.
But that’s the beauty of coaching; it opens you up to an entirely new perspective on life. If you are ready to see things in a whole new way and experience your life in a way you never before thought possible, then you might be ready to partner with a coach.
Ready to take action?
It’s not enough to say you are ready for change. It’s not enough to say you are okay being challenged. You have to be ready to take action.
Your coach is going to hold you accountable to taking the steps you need to take to achieve the goals you set for yourself. If making excuses comes easily to you and you would rather give into those excuses than actually do anything then you may not be ready for coaching.
Ready to do the internal work?
Often times what keeps you stuck and unable to move forward to your goals is limiting beliefs. Some of these you may have identified on your own but coaching can help bring even more of these limiting mindsets to the surface.
Dealing with them is a key part of your future success. This requires serious internal work, assessing where those beliefs come from and figuring out how to shift them so they don’t stand in your way.
This is not easy and for some people it feels too risky to go there. You have to decide you are ready to do the internal work of letting go of these beliefs that no longer serve you no matter how hard it is.
Ready to make the time to execute?
Working with a coach will take time out of your schedule, not just to meet with your coach but also to do the work in between sessions required for your on-going success.
When you’re as busy as I know you are, it is easy to say you don’t have the time. But the truth is we make time for what’s important.
Every one of us has the same 24 hours in a day. It is how we choose to spend those 24 hours that makes the difference. If you’re willing to carve out the time to devote to your success then coaching is likely a right step for you.
Ready to invest in yourself?
Many women struggle with doing anything for themselves, erroneously believing that it is selfish for you to think about yourself. I argue that you will be a far better wife, mother, partner, and leader when you take time to care for yourself.
Coaching is an investment in you. You are investing in caring for you so you can better care for those you are responsible for in your world. If you’re ready to make you a priority then you are ready for coaching.
My hope is that these six questions will help you discover how ready you are to step into a coaching relationship and if you find you are ready that you will take the step to get that support.
