coaching benefits, benefits of coaching

In its original context, the idea of a coach was a means of transportation to move people from one place to another; first by horse-drawn carriage and then by railroad cars.

Later the sports industry got a hold of the term and, until the last few decades, a coach was someone who helped a sports team win.

Today, the term coach has expanded but the essence is still the same. It’s about moving people from where they are to where they want to be.

Obviously, as a coach myself, I believe in the power of coaching. I have seen first hand, in my clients and in me, the incredible transformation that is possible with the support of the right coach.

I have hired coaches to support me at different times in my life, for both personal and professional reasons.

Today, I thought I would share with you 5 coaching benefits I have personally experienced. (My clients have also reported experiencing similar benefits from working with me).

In no particular order they are:

Releasing old beliefs

This has been a big one for me. Until I started working with a coach I had no idea how many limiting beliefs I had about myself. I knew there were areas where I didn’t feel as confident as I wanted. But I did not make the connection between my lack of confidence and those beliefs.

Identifying and learning to release those limiting beliefs has been a game changer for me. My confidence has grown and I’ve become a lot more comfortable with the word No 🙂

Increased clarity

When I started my business I wasn’t 100% clear about exactly what I wanted to do. Like many coaches, I started with a desire to help people.

But “helping people” is a vague statement with no real substance behind it. Working with a coach gave me the clarity I needed to name exactly HOW I want to help people.

I can now clearly say I help women find their brave, regret-proof their life and rise into their greatness. Coaching helped me find that clarity.

Accountability

I’m not a DIY kind of girl. This is true in my personal life and in my professional life. I’m an out loud processor and need a sounding board for my thoughts. I also need to have someone to run my ideas by to I know I’m moving in the right direction.

I’m fairly disciplined and can usually get stuff done. BUT I also know I suffer from Shiny Object Syndrome. I’m prone to starting another project before I’ve finished the one I’m on. The accountability of a coach is one of the coaching benefits that have kept me focused and hitting my goals.

Being stretched

The coaches I’ve worked with have also stretched me beyond what I thought was possible. They’ve gently but firmly nudged me out of whatever corner I might have been hiding.

They’ve believed in me and seen in me things I could not see in myself. And they have also mirrored back to me my unique gifts I took for granted as “normal for everyone”.

Not every coach was a good fit for me but the ones that were saw me. They saw me for who I truly was and pulled the best I was capable of out of me.

Given permission

Probably the greatest gift my coaches have given me is permission.

Permission to dream big.

Permission to want what I want without apology.

Permission to access my truth, name and own it regardless of how other people might feel about it.

Ultimately they helped me give myself permission to be ME. As simple as that might seem, we live in a world that works hard to convince us to be somebody other than who we are. For too long, I borrowed the narrative that I had to change to be “good enough”.

I now know better. I didn’t get there on my own. The personal development work I’ve done plus the support of some fabulous coaches helped me get there.
