The work I do with my clients around shifting the inner blocks of fear, doubt, and limiting beliefs (among other things) can be boiled down to helping you makeover your mindset.
Today I want to take a closer look at mindset and why it can make or break your success.
What is Mindset?
The dictionary defines mindset as a fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations 1.
I think of mindset as the set of beliefs and ideas you have about yourself and the world around you. Your mindset matters because it is the filter you use for processing the world and your experiences in it.
In her groundbreaking work on mindset, psychologist Carol Dweck says you can either have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset:
In a fixed mindset [people] believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that’s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb. In a growth mindset [people] understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching, and persistence. They don’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it. — Carol Dweck, Stanford University
I will simplify Dr. Dweck’s words even further by saying that you can have a tendency towards either a positive or a negative mindset.
Why it matters
Your mindset is important because it shapes everything about how you see the world and your place in it. It determines whether or not you reach your fullest potential, which in turn determines your level of impact.
Ultimately I believe your destiny is on the line if your mindset is in the wrong place. If you believe you “can’t….” or that you “shouldn’t…” or that you are “not enough to…” you will always hold yourself back from taking risks and from really showing up in your life.
When I talk about showing up in your life, I mean YOU are fully present with all of your gifts, talents, and unique qualities, not allowing your light to be diminished for any reason.
It means that you are not hiding any part of you or pretending to be someone you are not for the sake of fitting in. Showing up fully means that you are unapologetically you, doing those things that only you can do.
If your mindset is limited (or as Dr. Dweck says, fixed), you start from a place of believing you are not enough. You spend your time comparing yourself to everyone else, barely acknowledging the value you bring.
From this place of not enough, self-doubt hovers over you and you constantly second-guess yourself or you strive for perfection trying to mask your lack of self-confidence.
On the other hand, when your mindset is in the right place, you are much more willing to see the circumstances of your life as opportunities for you to stretch and grow.
Failures become stepping-stones forward and successes become moments that can be celebrated without you attaching your entire sense of self to them.
Change is possible
The plasticity of the brain means that it is possible to shift your mindset so it supports you instead of standing in your way. Three simple steps you can take:
Be willing
Changing your mindset starts with being willing to make the shift. It boils down to a choice that you will make. If you are willing to make the choice to start from a different place in your mind, you can shift your mindset to a more positive one.
Shift your focus
What you focus on is what grows so start focusing on the positive outcome you want. Dare to dream, dare to look for new possibilities, dare to assume the best rather than the worst. As you consistently make the choice to focus on the positive, you are creating changes in your brain chemistry that will lead to a different mindset.
Stay persistent
Change won’t happen overnight but if you remain persistent and consistent, you will start noticing a shift in how you perceive yourself and the world around you. Your mindset will change and you’ll start doing things you never dreamed possible. I speak from personal experience
