A few weeks ago I introduced the Women’s Leadership Manifesto and then started a three-part series to explore the tenets of the manifesto in more detail. You can read part one here and part two here.

Today I wrap up the series with the final four tenets:

We lead with integrity and true authenticity from a place of deep care for those we lead

Our innate ability, as women, to care for others is not a weakness. Instead, we use this ability to our advantage as we serve those we lead and move toward established goals.

We understand that character is “who you are when no one is looking”. Therefore, we make decisions based on what is best for all involved not simply what might serve our personal interests

We are also transparent in our leadership. We know that all the details do not have to always be shared but we also will not deliberately withhold information that might serve others well. Our character is more important than our ego.

We collaborate with, not compete against, the other leaders around us

An undercurrent of competition persists in leadership. It says that the best leader is the one who rises to the top, even if it’s at the expense of those around you.

We believe a spirit of competition robs us of effectiveness in our leadership. Collaboration is the key to innovation and true leaders innovate. We embrace the uniqueness of each individual and leave room for them at the table, allowing other perspectives to be heard even those that disagree with us.

We believe as we help others rise, we rise too. Therefore, we see the women next to us as a co-creator in our becoming

There is a perception in leadership that to help someone else means to risk him or her taking your “place” or becoming better than you.

We reject this idea because we believe everyone around us helps shape the trajectory of our leadership.

It is in mentoring and supporting others that our leadership will have its best and greatest expression. As we do this, we become the kind of leader we are most capable of becoming.

We are not reinventing ourselves; we are becoming who were always meant to be

This is not about reinvention this is about shedding. We are shedding the labels, the masks, and the weight of other people’s expectations to become who we have always been.

We have hidden our best self, believing she would not be accepted but we refuse to stay in hiding any longer. We will not be intimidated to retreat or diminish our light any longer. We are showing up because we know that we matter, we belong and we have something to say.

This is who we are! This is how we lead!
